WSJ.com - 'Mr. Moonves, Call Off Your Hillbilly Hunt'
What is a "Hillbilly"? by Gov. Zell Miller (Dem.) Georgia
" . . .My ancestors were among the very first mountain settlers, descendants of the Scotch-Irish who were driven out of Northern Ireland by the Stuart Kings. They landed in Maryland and Virginia and migrated westward as far as the hostile Indians and French would allow and then moved southward into the rugged mountains and beautiful valleys we now know as Appalachia. They were accompanied and followed by Huguenots, Quakers, Polatine Germans and other Protestant sects . . .
"Their language, customs, character, possessions, knowledge and tools were isolated with them and suspended in time, a microcosm of early American thought, culture and mores . . ."

U.S. Told To Quit Tobacco Talks | February 25, 2003 14:19:35
CBS) Accusing President Bush's administration of being beholden to cigarette multinationals, a coalition of American medical groups demanded that the United States withdraw altogether from international anti-tobacco negotiations and stop sabotaging the planned treaty.
"At this critical juncture, the United States government is working methodically to weaken virtually every aspect of this treaty," said John Seffrin, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society. "We call on the U.S. government to observe the first rule of the Hippocratic Oath: Do No Harm."
"The time has come for the United States to stand aside and allow the rest of the world to complete a treaty strong enough to change the course of the tobacco epidemic," Seffrin said.

Questions About Google Acquisition
By DAVID F. GALLAGHER
Google's recent purchase of Pyra Labs, creators of the Blogger service for publishing the online soapboxes known as Weblogs, was a happy ending for a much-loved startup that at times seemed on the edge of collapse.
But people who follow Weblogs are curious about what Google, the world's leading search engine, expects to gain from the deal.
The combination of Pyra and Google seems unlikely on the surface. Google helps people find information online, while Blogger helps them publish it.
People with knowledge of the deal, which gave Pyra founders and investors shares in privately held Google, say it was signed without any real plan as to how the two companies would work together.
But leading bloggers were bursting with ideas last week. Many said that by tapping into Weblogs, or blogs, which link to and comment on the freshest material on the Web, Google will be able to build more human intelligence and timeliness into its already formidable search engine.
"Follow Weblogs and you follow the buzz," said Jeff Jarvis, president of Advance.net, which is the Internet unit of Condé Nast's parent company, Advance Publications, and was an investor in Pyra.
